Conference Rm: Contemplative Prayer

Conference Rm: Contemplative Prayer

Every Tuesday, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

We believe that God knew us before we were born, sustains and blesses us every day, and will birth us into a new way of being when we die. It is amazing to think that the God who is Creator-of-All-That-Is, Holy Energy, Divine Mystery, the Cosmic Christ desires a personal relationship with each of us. Prayer is a way of growing this relationship, and there are many ways to pray. One of these is contemplative prayer.

“Contemplative prayer,” Fr. Thomas Keating writes in Open Heart, Open Mind, “is the world in which God can do anything. To move into that realm is the greatest adventure.” He continues, “All true prayer is based on the conviction of the presence of the Spirit in us and of his unfailing and continual inspiration.” But in contemplative prayer, we do not bring our problems, reflections, praise or will. Rather, the “Spirit prays in us and we consent.” We only show up!

The following is an explanation of Centering Prayer (so that contemplative prayer is possible):

Choose a sacred word as the symbol of your intention to consent to God’s present and action within.

Sitting comfortably and with eyes closed, settle briefly and silently introduce the sacred word.

When engaged with thoughts, return ever-so-gently to the sacred word.

At the end of the prayer period, remain in silence with eyes closed for a couple of minutes.
